WOMEN’S RELAY RECORD

ATHLETICS

BRITISH TEAM’S FAST RUN (N.Z. Press Association-Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON. July 17. Britain broke a British-held world record when Ann Oliver, Nora Shalley and Diane Leather did the 3 x 880 yards relay in 6min 46sec at an international athletics meeting at White City today. This was 3sec better than the time put up last August by a British team on the same track. The last runner of the trio, Diane Leather, holder of the world 880-yard record for women and the first woman to run the five-minute mile, was left to do the leg inside 2min 14.4 sec to establish a new record. She did three clear seconds inside this time to set a mark which is likely to stand for some time.
