Pursuance Should Race Well At Waimate Today

TROTTING

The Tinwald trainer, D. J. Townley, has good prospects of winning the Winter Handicap, the only trotting race at the Waimate Hunt Club’s annual meeting today. The Emulous gelding has had only two races this season and in both of them he has shown a fair measure of ability. He is meeting a very weak field today and if he can handle the going, he should not be troubled to win. At his first appearance, at Ashburton on June 5, Pursuance went a useful race for fifth in the Improvers’ Handicap, which was won by Historic. Two days later on the same course he had every chance in the Trial Handicap, but the last furlong of the twomile race found him out and he drifted to sixth. He should be a much improved horse today as a result of those two races. Jocund, a brother to Amiable and Affable, has not been placed in three starts this season. However, the Dillon Hall gelding has shown some

ability and he would not have to have much luck to be placed here. He is a member of R. W. Townley’s Orari team. Sir Roger, which is trained at Ashburton by R. J. Jones, is a likely type of maiden pacer. He has had only one race this season and in that he finished in the middle of the field. He is a half-brother by Josedale Dictator to Man Power, Maalesh and Lady French. Fairy Gift, which is trained by J. G. Shea at Washdyke, has shown speed in some of her races. The Bruce Walla mare is not always reliable at the start of her races, but if in a generous mood today, she may upset calculations. • A high opinion is held of Signet Ring, which is to make his first public appearance today. He is a four-year-old by Direct Heir from the Grattan Loyal mare, Finery, and he is trained at Chertsey by J. L. Behrns. The others in the race have little to recommend them and the best of them may be Long Range and Keryn.
