Ritchie, S.M. i REMANDED Huia Skipper, aged 17, a metal spini ner. of Woodend. was remanded to July 23 on a charge that on July 15 •he stole a felt hat valued at 10s. i the property of some person or peri sons unknown. Detective-Sergeant E. G. Ward said , a number of charges were pending. Bail was allowed in accused’s own recognisance of £2O, with one surety lot £2O. ; A young woman, whose name was : ordered not to be published in the i meantime, was remanded to July 23 ■on a charge of being idle and dis- | orderly in that she had insufficient lawful visible means of support. Bail [of £2O. with one surety of £2O, was allowed. FINED FOR FIGHTING Roland Francis Hill, aged 36, a farmer, of Ashburton, and Harold Joseph Taylor were each fined £3 on a charge that on July 15 they fought in a public place. Senior-Sergeant A. B. Collinge said about 7.30 p.m. a constable went to Armagh street behind a piecart. He found the two defendants rolling on the ground in a straight-out fight. LICENCE SUSPENDED “The Court looks upon this particular type of offence as serious,” said the Magistrate, when he convicted Colin Arthur Campbell on charges of driving a motor-cycle in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public, of having insufficient lights on his vehicle, and of having no rear light. He was fined £5 on the charge of dangerous driving, and his licence was suspended for 28 days, 10s for having insufficient lights, and ordered to pay costs for having no rear light. Constable W. E. S.. Smith said he was crossing England street at night. He could hear the sound of a motorcycle approaching but could see no lights. “Then suddenly a motorcycle without lights, with a pillion passenger and towing a cyclist, swooped past me.” he said. He was able to obtain the licence number of the motor-cycle, and learnt that the Gwher was the pillion passenger that evening, and the defendant was the driver. The defendant, when interviewed. admitted the charges. Constable Smith said it appeared that the cyclist was not being towed voluntarily. When the motor-cyclist was some little distance away he heard a girl call out to leave the handlebars alone. Defendant verified this and said the motor-cycle was ridden up alongside the girl and she was propelled along the road. The machine was in an unroadworthy condition. CHARGE DISMISSED A charge against George Donald Marchant (Mr H. W. Hunter) of incorrectly overtaking a bus was dismissed. i TRAFFIC CASES In cases brought by the police, offenders against the traffic regulations were dealt with as follows: Failed to give way to right.—Arthur Chester Ashbey. £2; Alan Donald Asquith. £2; Arthur Berry, £2; Desmond Vernon Jones, £2; William McLaughlin Mawhinney, £2; Stuart Suckling. £2.
