POLITICS AND RACING

“ Clubs By-Passing Conference ” PRESIDENT DEPLORES TENDENCY (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 16. Speaking to delegates on the subject of additional permits, the president of the New Zealand Racing Conference (Mr H. R. Chalmers) at the annual meeting of the conference today deplored the “tendency of some clubs to by-pass the conference and go direct to the Government of the day, and exercise political pressure to get what they seek. “The conference is the parliament of racing, and is representative of all the clubs which conduct race meetings, and it is my very firm opinion that clubs should leave it to the conference to make any necessary approach to the Government of the country,” said Mr Chalmers. To make such an appeal directly and to endeavour to use political pressure could only undermine the authority and standing, and also the usefulness of the conference; and he again appleaded to all clubs to rely upon their own elected body, he said.
