ESCAPED ZOO MONKEYS

ONLY ONE STILL AT LARGE (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 27. Auckland’s 16-day monkey puzzle is almost solved. Only one of the five bonnet monkeys which escaped from the zoo is still at large. Two more of the animals were caught on Friday afternoon when they appeared in the Ponsonby road shopping area, nearly a mile from the zoo. The monkeys were seen on the parapet of a two-storey boardinghouse, but tumbled down and made a dash across the busy road before zoo officials could reach the scene. One monkey crossed successfully, but the other was struck by a car and lay dazed. A passer-by picked it up and locked it in his car. The other monkey doubled back across the road and disappeared. Later in the afternoon the zoo director (Mr R. W. Roach) enlisted the aid of 400 school children in a search for the truant. It was found behind the Ponsonby road shops and jumped from roof to roof before descending to the ground, where a youth caught it by the tail after a brief chase.
