Mighty Dollar Likely To Win At Wingatui Today

RACING

(From Our Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, June 10. Mighty Dollar may not have to do his best to preserve his unbeaten winning record in open company in the Empire Handicap on the third day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting tomorrow. The Wingatui-trained Treasure Hunt colt started racing in open company at the Riverton Easter meeting, and easily beat two useful sprint fields. He will have little in the way of opposition tomorrow, and unless he runs well below his best form, he should take his 'good record a stage further. Brooke may be closest .to Mighty Dollar at the finsh, if’ reserved for this race.

Johnny Peep may be the pick of the others.

Blackfellow will probably be a firm favourite for the Queen Elizabeth Handicap, the first leg of the double, but he will be tested by Hunter’s Choice, if that five-year-old runs one of his best races.

A successful season looked likely for Hunter's Choice when he ran fourth in the last Winter Cup, but apart from a placing in a 'welter at Wingatui -in December, his form since has been nothing to enthuse about. What raises hopes for a good race from him, however, is the fact that he usually runs well fresh, and has proved his ability to gallop freely in bad ground. Wayren for Second Leg

Cheerio is expected to be reserved for the Domain Handicap. Wayren, winner of the Brighton Hack Handicap on the first day, may record his second win for the meeting in the Domain Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double. The improver in this field will probably be Square Dance, which had his second run for the season last Saturday. He gallops well in bad ground, and has shaped creditably in stronger company than this.

Free Gift is on the way back to the form he showed when he ran second to Fairhome in the Grand National Hurdles. His two seconds over country earlier at the meeting make him the form horse for the Dunedin Steeplechase.

The top-weight, Ryeland, has given his connexions some anxiety this week, and he will not run if there is any possibility of his winter programme being interrupted. Belgravia is also a doubtful starter. If Ryeland and Belgravia are scratched, the field will be reduced to six starters, and Cherry Prince may be E>ee Gift’s strongest opponent. Profane, Riverstone and Tenner are expected to dominate the finish of the June Hurdles. Riccarton stables should again be well represented in the Electric Stakes, with Lushing. Carol York and the two-year-old Gold Flame in the field. Gold Flame lost his chance at the start of the Trial Stakes last Saturday. Suncrest is expected to make a successful first appearance at the meeting in the Tainui Hack Tandicap. Two starts ago,, she ran second to Brooke, over six furlongs, on a heavy track at Riverton. This time she will meet Brooke on a stone better terms, and this should give her a. chance if she

Dutch Flag,’ a stablemate of Suncrest, is ■ one of the form runners in this field, but he has an alternative

Red Admiral did well to finish fifth over seven furlongs last Monday, after striking trouble at the start, and with any luck he should improve on that performance. Copperfield, the runnerup to Wayren in the Brighton Hack Handicap last Saturday, should do best of the others. Locherbie Selected Locherbie has found success elusive throughout his career, but the change for the better may come in the Aidworth Hack Handicap. He was the runner-up to Abbot’s Choice in the corresponding race last week, and would have troubled the winner more than he did if his jockey had not lost his whip earjjrin the race. Evening Shoes, fourth last Saturday after getting an interrupted run, may also take beating but Abbot’s Choice will go close to repeating a double for the meeting if he gallops as generously again. Th e course Proper was harrowed on Wednesday, and in the absence of further rain, the going should be slightly better tomorrow than it was on Monday. WAKATU WELL SUPPORTED STRADBROKE HANDICAP TODAY . Wakatu’s price for the Stradbroke Hanh® r ? n . V? BriJita ce today, was !?; b- eut following his good trial at Eagle Farm on Thursday, says a Brisbane report. One bookmaker said the price on offer aoout Wakatu at Eagle Farm on Saturday would be 40 points less than that obtainable at ©xenford yesterday. Karendi, consolidating his position as favourite, now is at under a third of obtair figures with that Prtoe difficult to First Century has been moved up in the Brisbane- Cup market to join Earldom on the third line. The orders are:— ' STRADBROKE HANDICAP, Of seven furlongs. Run today. Karendi. Birdwood, Gay Vista. Grand Topic. Crown Signal, Kagaru, Raoid River. - Paper Strip, Rising Fast. Desert Breeze, Persian Link, Spearby, Wakatu. John Prodige, Maltmaid, Copper Beech, Coals ton. BRISBANE CUP, Two miles. Run on Monday. Lancaster. Lord Forrest. Earldom, First Century. Kowmata, Lord Saunders, Takatu. The Stradbroke Handicap Is to start at 4.35 pun. New Zealand time today. GRAND BOY RETURNS TO N.Z. REPURCHASED BY BREEDER Grand Boy, which broke down during an Australian campaign last year, has been repurchased by his breeder, Mr A. M. A. Englebrecht, of Waimate, and he arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Australia. A six-year-old brown horse by Siegfried from Chop Suey, Grand Boy first came into prominence when, in Mr Englebrecht’s colours, he scored a surprise win in the Yaldhurst Handicap at Riccarton in April, 1952, at odds of 380 to 1. Last season he won the Fendalton Handicap at Riccarton, and was purchased at a four-figure sum by Mr C. C. Neville, who placed him with the Riccarton trainer, C. C. McCarthy. Grand Boy accompanied Mr Neville’s champion, Dalray, to Australia, and before breaking down in Birsbane a year ago he was successful in Melbourne. After his breakdown Grand Boy was sold for a three-figure sum to a Brisbane owner, who in turn resold him to Mr Engelbrecht. It Is not known whether the gelding will be able to race again.

SELLWOOD TO RIDE RISING FAST

(N-Z. Press Association—Copy right) (Rro. 930 p.m.) BRISBANE, June 11. The trainer, Ivan Tucker, announced today that the leading jockey, Neville Sellwood had accepted the ride on the New Zealander, Rising Fast, in the Stradbroke Handicap tomorrow. Sellwood, who came to ride Prince Morvi, was left without a mount when the colt was withdrawn with a leg injury. As soon as Sellwood accepted the ride Rising Fast displaced Grand Topic as third favourite for the big sprint. Some bookmakers have reduced his price by eight to 10 points. Rising Fast’s price m the opening call on the track tomorrow is expected to be a couple of points better than double figures. Karendi a clear-cut favourite at a price approximating a fourth of double figures. He is more than three points under the equal second favourites, Birdwood and Gay Vista.
