THEFTS FROM EMPLOYER
SALESMAN ADMITTED TO PROBATION
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, June 11.
The accused had been subjected by a bookmaker to cruel and excessive demands for the payment of gambling debts—he was satisfied about that, said Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland today. He admitted Wynton James Wilkinson, aged 29, a salesman, to two years’ probation on three charges of stealing sums totalling £9B 18s 6d from his employers, George Court and Sons, Ltd. The bookmaker concerned had denied the allegations that he was blackmailing Wilkinson, said Mr K. C. Aekins, counsel for the accused. But the bookmaker had not given evidence before the Court, and Wilkinson’s sworn word remained uncontradicted.
“When Wilkinson lost his job, the bookmaker said, ‘What, have you been at the loot again?’” said Mr Aekins. “I submit this man was blackmailing the accused, and that he knew very well where the money was coming from. He would either send a girl, or collect it himself from Wilkinson.” The Magistrate said the charge was serious. It involved stealing in an irresponsible way, while in a position of trust. But there were matters of mitigation which he would take into account. First, there was the frank confession the accused had rhade. Further, apart from excessive gambling and the thefts, he had been well behaved.
“Your relations with this bookmaker have become the subject of a good deal of publicity,” the Magistrate said. “I am satisfied this man subjected you to cruel - and excessive demands for payment.” . The Magistrate ordered Wilkinson to make restitution of the money stolen, and to. refrain from gambling during the period of probation.
