COMMUNIST HUMOUR
Sir, —It would be interesting if students of Marxian communism could
tell us whether there is any substantial element of humour in Communist
literature and in the Communist ethos generally. One has the impression that the Communist philosophy lacks the gaiety of spirit that shows .itself in
a wholesome sense of humour. Is this impression borne out by the facts? If true humour is indeed wanting in communism, what is the reason for it? Is it the atheism upon which Marxian communism deliberately builds its policy of materialism?—Yours, etc., PARSON. June 11, 1954.
