POLISH PIANIST’S VISIT
RECITAL IN CHRISTCHURCH NEXT WEEK
Recognised as one of the most brilliant interpreters of. Chopin and a staunch supporter of the modern school, Jan Smeterlin, a Polish pianist, will give a single concert in Christchurch next week. “Musical poet and virtuoso combined,” “a master musician,” “beyond compare in Chopin,” and “pure joy” are a few of the comments cm his concerts by American critics. ' . _ , Mr Smeterlin was born at Bielsko, Poland. He was given piano instruction at the age of six, and by the time he was eight he was invited to play a Moazrt concerto with the local orchestra. His father, who opposed a musical career, sent his son to the University of Vienna to study law. There he joined the piano class of Godowsky, vzon the State prize, and was sent to London and Berlin for demonstration recitals. He soon became an outstanding figure in music circles of Paris, London, Vienna, Madrid, the Hague, and Scandinavia. He went to America for the first time in 1933, and has made annual tours since. In addition to his recitals in Britain, he has appeared as guest ardtist with a number of major symphony orchestras. He has also had successful tours in Mexico, Argentine, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Cuba, and Canada. A keen supporter of modern works. Mr Smeterlin has given first performances of Dukas, Ravel, Albeniz, and Szymanowski. On Tuesday his programme will be Brahms, and Chopin.
