NEW FRENCH COMMANDER

(Rec. 10 p.m.) PARIS, June 5. The French Defence Ministry announced that General Paul Ely, the newly-appointed French Commander-ki-Chief in Indo-China, would leave tomorrow to take up his command. General Raoul Salan, the former Indo-China Commander-in-Chief, will accompany him as Military Deputy. General Ely, who has been given full civil and military power, will succeed General Henri Navarre, who was appointed last year. General Salan is considered by the French High Command to be the French General with the widest knowledge and experience of Vietminh psychology and strategy. He has served in Indo-China almost continuously since 1945,- and in 1952 he succeeded the late Marshal Jean de Lattre de Tassigny as Commander-in-Chief in Indo-China.

When General Navarre succeeded him last year, General Salan became Inspector-General of Metropolitan France—a semi-security post involving appreciation of fifth column action in France should an emergency occur.
