(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, June 4. The Queen was represented by the Earl of Scarborough, the Lord Chamberlain, and the Duke of Gloucester by Major Michael Hawkins, at the memorial service for the late Sir Frederick Doidge at St. Martip’s-in-the-Fields. The church was packed for the simple, dignified service, conducted by the Rt. Rev. P. W. Stephenson, formerly Lord Bishop of Nelson. The address was given by the Rt. Rev. G. V. Gerard, Assistant Bishop of Sheffield, and formerly Bishop of Waiapu.
The service began with the hymn “Jesu, Lover of My Soul,’’ followed by the Psalm “The Lord is My Shepherd” and the, lesson from Revelation 21: 1 to 7, read by Dr; R. M. Campbell, the Acting-High Commissioner. After the anthem “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” and prayers, the Lord’s Prayer, and the hymn “He Who Would Valiant Be,” Bishop Gerard gave the address, tracing Sir Frederick Doidge’s career.
The service ended with the hymn “Praise My Soul the King of Heaven.” Sir Winston Churchill was represented by Lieutenant-Colonel J. M. Hugo, the Archbishop of Canterbury by the Rev. Eric Jay. Others in the congregation included the diplomatic corps—the French, Saudi Arabian, Irish, Italian, Danish, and Korean Ambassadors—the High Commissioners for the other Dominions, members of the British Government, including Lord Swinton, Lord Woolton.
