AT ASHBURTON TODAY

TROTTING

DAYBREAK EXPECTED TO WIN AGAIN

HISTORIC SHOULD BEAT MAIDEN PACERS

The Tinwald owner-trainer, J. Grice, should extend his good record this season with Daybreak in the Allenton Handicap on the opening day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting today. Daybreak was a winner at the second of her only two starts this season. That was at Methven on March 27, when she beat Barravey and Circlette. She showed plenty of ability after beginning slowly in that race, and if she trots as solidly today she should win. Primavera, a four-year-old mare by Josedale Dictator from Ivy Wrack, finished third to Barravey and Pukepoto over two miles on a heavy track at Awapuni last month. She will probably appreciate the firmer foing expected today and may do better. Circlette, a five-year-old mare by U. Scott from Within, has shown ability in some of her races this season. She should run out the two miles today more solidly than many of her opponents, and it will be surprising if she fails to show up. Prestbury had his first start for the season at Oamaru last month and he ran a fair race for seventh. He was finishing on at the post and he should be an improved horse today. Kauru Eoy, a member of W. L. Heron’s Rangiora team, was a winner at the recent Addington trials. He is a solid trotter as a rule and may be prominent.

The others in the race have little to recommend them and the best of them may be Amigo, Larnie Scott, and Astrakan. Historic Favoured Historic, a brother to a smart pacer in Valour, will probably be favourite for the Improvers’ Handicap. The Light Brigade three-year-old was a good fifth in his race at Oamaru when making his first appearance at a totalisator meeting. He should benefit from that run and it will be surprising if he fails today, when he will be meeting a weaker field. Mandoza was impressive when he qualified at Addington last month. The half-brother by Wayfarer to Magellan has not raced this season, but last term he showed speed. Mandoza should eventually develop worthwhile form and he can be expected to give a good account of himself in this comparatively weak field. Jocund, which is trained at Orari by R. W. Townley, has not been extensively raced, but he has shown a useful turn of speed. The Dillon Hall gelding will only need to begin smartly to be placed. Belamour has several placings to her credit in the North Island, but she did not impress at the Addington trials. She may do better on the grass track at Ashburton. Bonny Argyle, Dione, Pursuance and Skirl are other maiden pacers likely to show up, but they are unlikely to beat Historic, Caduceus will be a firm favourite for the New Zealand’ Futurity Stakes in spite of his recent failures. The U. Scott three-year-old showed outstanding form in the spring and summer and it will be most surprising if he fails to give a sood account of himself. Most opposition to him may come from Brahman, Grand Monarch, Gay Lad, and Santa Amada, all of whish have more than average ability. An outstanding field of intermediate class pacers is engaged in the Durbar Handicap. There are four strong brackets, all of which are assured of solid support, in the race. The best of the brackets may be that of Lodestar and Jaunty, both of which have been recent winners.

Straight Eight, Rowan Star, Barcola, Waihi Princess, Fair Annette, and Scottish Note are others expected to add interest to the finish of this race. Luckylast will be solidly supported to bring her record to three successive wins since being trained in Canterbury when she parades in the Rakaia Handicap. The hardest for the Blaydon mare to beat may be Lexeter, which was narrowly beaten at his most recent appearance, Green Label, Luminous, Blazeworthy, Speed King and Air Command.

Stadium Chief will be a firm favourite for the Harvest Handicap after a convincing win at Amberley last Saturday. The Dillon Hall gelding has done well in recent weeks. He can expect strong opposition from Royal Crown, Band Queen, Moko Boy, Currency, Romanesque, and Direct Hall.
