A MODERN PORT WITHIN REACH
Si r> —From yesterday’s discussion at the meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, it is evident that country members are not prepared to support progressive moves. We can understand the attitude of the Ashburton representative, because already a 7 considerable proportion of produce from the Ashburton county is shipped through Timaru, and this will increase while Lyttelton lags. Mr McAlpine’s attitude is not so easy to understand; because so much “caution” has been exercised in past years, our port, like so many other Christchurch amenities, has suffered. A bold, progressive policy is wanted. —Yours, etc., PROGRESS. June 3, 1954.
