TEACHERS HOLD BALL
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE FUNCTION
The first ball arranged by the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held in the Winter Garden last evening. About 300 teachers from many parts of Canterbury and their friends enjoyed the hospitality of the committee. The ballroom and lounges were decorated with large bowls of red berries, green and deep red hydrangeas, and chrysanthemums. Humorous cartoons of topical interest were prominently displayed. The guests of honour were received by Mrs G. Cree, president of the branch, and Mrs M. L. Barnard, the vice-president. They included Mr B. C. Penney, Dominion president of the institute, and Mrs Penney; Mr S. J. Irwin, chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, and Mrs Irwin; Mr W. J. Cartwright, chairman of the Canterbury University College Council, and Mrs Cartwright; Mr J. F. Johnson. senior inspector for the Canterbury Education Board, and Mrs Johnson; and Mr D. Mackay, principal of Christchurch Teachers’ College, and Mrs Mackay. Mrs Cree wore a handsome frock of Swiss brocade in shades of silver-grey arid cerise, made with a full circular skirt. The fitting bodice featured a collar in early Tudor style. Mrs Barnard’s frock was of navy blue faille, made with a fitting bodice and high neckline outlined in diamente trimming. Fullness in the back of the skirt came from unpressed pleats. Members of the committee who arranged the ball were Mr T W. Curr (chairman), Mr R. N. Brooke (secretary), Miss M. F. Sowden, Miss H. C. Wilson, Messrs R. D. Johnston, B. H. Wilkinson, and I. E. Cummins.
