MR MAO APPEARS IN PUBLIC
(Rec. 10 p.m.) PEKING, May 1. Communist China’s leader, Mr Mao Tse-tung, often recently reported ill, was present on a special rostrum surrounded by the nation’s top-rankimr leaders when a mammoth parade was staged in Peking today In celebration of May Day. About 500,000 persons cheered fanatically as the parade got under way amid the booming of runs and music from massed bands. The crowd gave Mr Mao a tumultuous welcome as he appeared on the rostrum, clapping their hands, cheering, and throwing bouquets into the air.
