SERIES OF SERMONS ON MIRACLES

COURSE BY DEAN OF CHRISTCHURCH The Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan) completed a six weeks’ course of sermons on the miracles of Jesus Christ at evensong at the Cathedral yesterday. Taking incidents as described in the New Testament, the Dean drew from them lessons for modern times. He chose the miracle of the man born blind for his first sermon in the lenten series, followed by the miracle of St. Peter walking on water, the miracle of the paralysed man at the pool of Bethsda, the healing of the daughter of the Syrophoenician woman, the turning of the water into wine, and the feeding of the 5000. The evensong sermons were taken concurrently with a course of sermons on services in the Book of Common Prayer, which the Dean has been giving on Wednesday evenings. Holy Week services will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons for schoolchildren at the Cathedral at 4 p.m. this week, conducted by the Rev. P. W. D. Parr, chaplain of Christ’s College. On Good Friday Matins and Litany will be held at 10 a.m. at the service of Ante-Communion at the Cathedral. From noon to 3 p.m. the Service of the Three Hours will be conducted by the Rev. K. Schollar, chaplain at the Royal New Zealand Air Force station, Wigram. At 7.30 pan. a passion meditation will be sung by the choir.
