ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL REFEREES
Sir, —A report in “The Press” states that the Canterbury Football Association is, appealing for referees. I am not surprised. A little history of the Canterbury Referees’ Association may help players to understand and to tolerate the inefficiency of some referees. From 1927 to 1941 Mr J. Stout was president of the Canterbury Referees’ Association. He built the association up to a large membership of keen supporters. Meetings were held fortnightly at his residence and the local examining board demanded a high standard of efficiency. There was no shortage of referees. Application was made to the Canterbury Football Association for a free pass for referees to attend matches held at English Park. This was refused and some members of the association made ungentlemanly remarks about the referees. An apology was asked for but has not arrived, so the Referees’ Association, which was second to none in New Zealand, remains disbanded. — Yours, etc., A. S. CREW, New Zealand Badge Referee. March 26, 1954.
