FIJIAN CRICKET TEAM

MATCH WITH OTAGO

HoMl<> SIDE NEEDS 62 RUNS

TO WIN (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, February 14. Otago ended the second .day of its match against the Fijian cricketers with six wickets in hand, and requiring 62 runs to win. Yesterday the Fijians thrilled a crowd of 5000 at Carisbrook with their hard hitting and spectacular fie i? iX D.’ Smith declared Otago’s first innings closed yesterday morning, at. 251 for eight wickets. Fiji scored 240 in its second innings, and Otago required 196 to win. The weather yesterday was very warm. A highlight of the play was the innings of W. W. Apted. He was dismissed when only four runs short of a century. Like most of the other Fijians, Apted showed he was primarily a fast-scoring batsman. Where he differed from his team-mates, however, was in his judgment in hitting the right ball. This he did with power and exactness. Some ox rus boundary shots gave the fieldsmen no chance of intercepting the ball. Apted s first 50 took 68 minutes. He batted altogether for 147 minutes. He hit 12 4 s. The Fijians made their first 50 in 43 minutes; 150 in 121 minutes; and 200 In 154 minutes. The total of 240 was scored in 175 minutes. - . , „ The Otago captain used eight bowlers during the innings. Moir and Smith were the most successful. Moir took three wickets for 46 runs, and Smith two for 7. On the two occasions on which Otago batted yesterday, the batsmen endeavoured to keep up the rate of scoring. In the morning, before the innings was declared closed, 71 runs were scored in 42 minutes. Of these, Smith made 39 including six 4’s. He took his score to 49 before he was well caught by H. Apted off Mara’s bowling. The Otago openers in the second innings, P. Skelton and T. Flaws, set about the bowling from the beginning. In 10 minutes, 21 runs were on the board, and in 31 minutes the 50 was posted. Scores:—
