GOLDEN GALLEON

OVERDUE WIN IN TE AWAMUTU CUP

No horse in the Te Awamutu Cup at the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting on Saturdav deserved success more than the winner, Golden Galleon. It was the five-year-old Golden Galleon’s first victory since he won the Waikato One Thousand Guineas in the late spring of 1951. In the meantime he had started 25 times for 16 minor placings in good fields. Golden Galleon's win was evidently expected, for, in a field of 18. he was 2, 1 in the order of favouritism. In a good finish, he beat Gillace by half a length, with a length to the promis-

ing Nabob. An attractive chestnut, Golden Galleon was bred by Mr W. Alexander. Te Awamutu. and was sold at the 1950 national yearling sales at Trentham to Sir Matthew Oram for 1125 guineas. An Admiral’s Luck entire, he is from an unraced mare, Rosina, which is by Foxbridge or Nizami from Eager Rose. Eager Rose was also the dam of Fearless Fox which had four wins, including the Queensland Derby and the President’s Handicap at Brisbane: Calm Courage (a good winner, and third in the Great Northern Derby); Cuba (winner of the Silverstream Handicap at Trentham); and Foxrose (winner of the weight-for-age Waipa Plate). Herself the winner of 12 races, including the A.R.C. Takapuna Cup, the Christmas Handicap (twice), and the Ohinemuri Cup. Eager Rose was a half-sister to Alunga (15 wins). Sweet Rose (five wins). Town Guard (four wins), and Arawa Rose (the dam of Distinction). Golden Galleon has been trained throughout his career by J. L. McDonald. Te Awamutu, and he has been a very successful stake-earner for his connexions. He was a brilliant two-year-old in the 1950-51 season, and gained five wins and one second plac-

ing from nine starts for Dr. W. J. Oram and J. D. Wallace, in. whose interests he raced that season. The most important of those successes were the Taranaki Stakes and the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. In the next season, for Sir Matthew Oram, Golden Galleon won the Avondale Guineas and was twice placed from his three other starts before winning the Waikato Guineas. Golden Galleon is now at his best again, and he should earn further distinction at the approaching holiday meetings in the north. With Bst 41b. he is second to Shot Silk (Bst 71b) in the handicap for the Freyberg Cup, the main event at the Ohinemuri Racing Club’s meeting at Paeroa next Saturday. He is not an acceptor for the Royal Auckland Cup, but has Bst 51b for the £.1500 Christmas Handicap, one mile, on the opening day at Ellerslie.

J. W. Pankhurst at Riccarton J W. Pankhurst, who until this season was private trainer to a successful Dunedin owner. Mr G. J. Barton, is now preparing gallopers at Riccarton. Pankhurst s new team includes Prince Crusader and Kanuka. Before coming to Riccarton to train. Pankhurst was for a short time at Waimate. in control of the team 01 Mr E. R. Curtis. For Mr Curtis. he paraded Travesty to win his first hurdle race, at the Geraldine meeting m September.

Favourites Fare Badly Hororata did not prove a happy hunting ground for win favourites when the Hororata Racing Club’s annual meeting was held on Saturday. The only first favourite to return a dividend was BJacksmitn. which finished a close third in the Coalgate Trot Handicap. Second and third favourites for a win were more successful. however, with four successes and three minor placings.

Horses Leave for North T A. Griffiths, private trainer to Sir John McKenzie, left Riccarton yesterday with Bowling Green. Captain Hawi*, and Edendale. which he accompanied north last evening on the inter-island express. Bowling Green and Captain Hawk have engagements on the first day oi the Manawatu Racing Clubs meeting on Saturday.

Frances; her half-sister. Tripod, the dam of Clinker: Silver Lily, the dam of Silver King. Our Moureen. the dam of Irish Wmg s ; and Regal Note, a seven-year-old Royal Chief mare whose dam. Pal s Note, is a halfsister to Combat, Taxpayer. Compere, and Wild Note.
