RETIRING MAYOR OF AUCKLAND
CITIZENS’ GIFTS TO SIR JOHN ALLUM (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 15. Sir John Allum the retiring Mayor of Auckland, and Lady Allum were today presented by citizens with a silver and ivory tea service and a cheque for £3OO. Mr L. N. Ross, a former president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, in making the presentation, praised Sir John Allum for his service to the city since he was elected to the City Council in 1920, and especially since his election as Mayor in 1941. Mr Ross said agreement by the Government to the building of a modified harbour bridge had represented a triumph for Sir John Allum, who was the chairman of the Bridge Authority. Sir John Allum said his 33 years of public service had been happy and interesting, and he paid a tribute to councillors and members of other local bodies who had supported him. “We are not quite finished yet,” he concluded; “there is still the bridge to be built.”
