WEDNESDAY (Before Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M.) REMANDED John Henry Ward, aged 39, a slaughterman (Mr B. McClelland), was remanded to November 25 on a charge that on November 11, 1953, while under the influence of drink to such an extent as to be incapable of having proper control of a vehicle, he was in charge of a car in Hereford street. Bail was renewed.

Ernest Louvain Smart, aged 38, a fitter (Mr A. Hearn), pleaded guilty to a charge of obscene exposure at New Brighton on November 17 and was remanded to November 25. Bail fn his own recognisance of £5O, with one surety of £5O, was allowed, with the condition that he report daily to the police. IDLE AND DISORDERLY CHARGE Accused was an associate of active criminals, and when he was arrested ex-' plosives were found in his car, said De-tective-Sergeant G. W. Alty, when asking that bail for Geoffrey William Fisher, aged 33, a labourer (Mr B. McClelland), if allowed at all, should be substantial. Fisher was charged that on November 17 he was deemed to be idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient lawful visible means of support. He was remanded to November 26, and bail of £lOO, with .one surety of £lOO, was allowed.

ALLEGED BREAKING AND ENTERING Detective-Sergeant Alty also opposed bail for Walter James Steel, aged 28, a seaman (Mr A. Hearn), who was charged that on or about November 12 he broke and entered the counting-house of the Riccarton Borough Council, 191 Clarence road, with intent to commit theft. De-tective-Sergeant Alty said Steel had admitted having attempted to blow open a strongroom door with explosives. Bail was refused.

RAN GAME OF CHANCE On a charge that on November 13 he played in the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Show Grounds at Addington the game of chance known as “red, white, and blue,” Harry Seyb, a pensioner, pleaded guilty and was fined £5.

Detective-Sergeant G. W. Alty said a detective found defendant running the game at the Show Grounds. A number of children were around the table, which had 3s 6d on it, and another sum ol money was lying on the counter.
