“Detective Helicopter, C.I.D.”
The übiquitous helicopter has long been recognised as a valuable aid to police work. The New York City Police has an active helicopter unit engaged in such diverse duties as air-sea rescue, traffic control, harbour patrol, and ambulance work. The British police, too, have not been slow to realise the value of the rotary wing. In the 1930’s the Metropolitan Police in England made very effective use of autogiros for traffic control. Now the helicopter has been introduced in the anti-criminal activities of the British police force. Recently a Bristol Sycamore took part in an exercise with the Police College, Coventry, and the Warwickshire County Police. The aerial detective tracked down three “bandits” escaping in a “stolen” car after an “armed robbery.” Guided by radio messages from the aircraft, the “criminals” were caught within 14 minutes Of the alarm.-
