PRESS COMMENT IN BRITAIN

“Austria Should Have Trieste” (Rec. 11 pum.) LONDON, November 9. The “Daily Mail” suggested today that the port of Trieste should be handed over to Austria. The agitation over Trieste was largely unreal because only prestige was involved, the newspaper said in a leading article. “Italy does not need the port. She showed that by the way she let it down between the wars. Jugoslavia is not keen to get it either. If she were she ipould not have suggested that Italy take it while Jugoslavia occupies the hinterland. “The best course would be to return it to Austria who desperately needs an outlet to the south.’’ Both the “Daily Mail” and the “Daily Telegraph” said that the Trieste demonstrations had been carefully organised but emphasised that the Italian Government could not be accused of conniving at them. The “Daily Mail,” however, said that the Italian Government must take much of the blame because it incited rather than calmed national feeling. The “Daily Telegraph” said the Italian clamour for immediate entry into Trieste was nothing less than clamour for war with Jugoslavia. “If the Italians realise this, the first step will have been taken; towards creating conditions in -.which their rightful aspirations can be satisfied without the risk of war,” the newspaper added. The “Manchester Guardian” said that the reports of the Trieste rioting did not sound “like the harmless frolics of students.” “The removal of the Italian nag might be an adequate reason for protests, but it was nbt a reason for rioting and hooliganism.”
