The Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) was yesterday advised by his doctor to rest, and will today apply in" the House of Representatives for leave from attending sittings this week. Dr. R. G. Howes, who has for -the last two years supervised the NorthCanterbury Hospital Board’s hospital at Waitangi in the Chatham Islands will return to Christchurch on November 19. His place at Waitangi will be taken by Dr. T. Shannon, a house surgeon at the Christchurch Public Hospital. While he is in Christchurch Dr. Howes will take a month’s postgraduate study course at the Christchurch hospital.

Mr W. G. Hanger, M.Sc., of the Uni-\ versity of Otago, has been appointed a Ramsay Memorial Fellow, according to advice received by the University of New Zealand from the Ramsay Memorial Trustees, of University College, London. Mr Hanger is the first New Zealander tp be awarded this fellowship, which carries with it a distinction in the world of science. ®Jr Hanger was a student in the chemistry department of the University, of Otago. He recently left New Zealand to undertake a post-graduate course at King’s College, Cambridge.—(P.A.)
