NATIONAL COUNCIL TO PURSUE AIMS

FORMATION EXPECTED IN FEW WEEKS (From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, November 9. A national housing council to carry on the work of the housing conference held in August will be set up by the Government within the next few weeks. It was suggested at the conference that" unless there was continued consultation among the various organisations little would be* achieved by holding the conference, and it was decided that a national housing council should be established.

The Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan has recently set out his views on the proposed council in a letter to various interested organisations. The council will be an advisory body, but it will also give tbe industry an opportunity to discuss problems with the Government. In turn the Government will inform the industry of any changes in its policy. It is proposed that the council consist of one representative from each of the 40 organisations represented at the conference. This body would be too large for day-to-day working, and an executive committee of about nine members will be set up to carry but that work.

Under the chairmanship of the Minister it would consist of two representatives from builders, two from employees, one from sub-contractors, one from professional bodies, one from local authorities, one from lending and other institutions, and one from suppliers’ organisations. The main council would meet once a year and the executive committee once a fortnight. Where necessary, representatives from particular organisations could be added for any meeting at which there vyas an item on the agenda of special interest to those organisations.
