FREEZING COMPANIES’ . MOVES
FEDERATED FARMERS TO INVESTIGATE
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 9. The council of the meat and wool section of Federated Farmers decided at its quarterly meeting last week to investigate “monopolistic tendencies in the supply of meat for local consumption.” The decision was made in terms of a remit from South Canterbury.
The secretafy of the section (Mr D. L. M. Martin) said today that the council was concerned' at the moves of freezing companies to buy more butchers’ retail shops in New Zealand and alsd to purchase wholesale meat supply businesses. He said %he council had expressed fears that the freezing companies might obtain monopolies on the local meat market. The resolution that was passed meant that the council would investigate the extent to which the freezing companies had control of the local meat market.
