BRANCH RAILWAY LINES
Sir, —Now the Government has finally decided to scrap thfe Eyreton branch railway, may I suggest that the time is opportune to reshuffle the whole transport system? The building of a highway traffic bridge at the Harewood road crossing of the Waimakarirl, ahd the opening up of the Harewood road (now a surveyed map road) would appear to be an economic project with every .merit. The Eyrewell State forest, of 30,000 acres, which now sends a large amount of timber by road to Christchurch—a traffic which in a few years will be many times greater—would warrant this national highways expenditure. The route across the bridge would halve the distance to Christchurch for State forests and truck and stock traffic from Oxford, Ashley, and Eyre counties.—Yours, etc., R. G. WOLFF. November 9, 1953.
