NEW ZEALAND TITLES

GOLF

PLAY TO BEGIN TOMORROW

130 ENTER FOR MEETING AT BALMACEWEN (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, November 9. The New Zealand golf championships will be held on the Balmacewen course, Dunedin, from November 11 to November 18. There are 130 entries, including the leading amateur and professional players of the Dominion, besides Peter Thomson, of Australia, runner-up in the British Open for the last two years. Particular interest will centre on the amateur championships because of the representative team of six golfers to be selected to compete in Britain. Ail four members of the team that recently toured Australia—D. L. Woon, T. J. Jeffery, S. A. McDonald, and S. G. Jones—will compete. The only title-holder not defending his championship ttus year is the New South Wales amateur, H. Berwick, who was in New Zealand last year as a member of the Australian team. Five former ..amateur champions will compete. They are H. A. Black (Wellington), B. M. Siik (Wanganui). A. Gibbs (Otago), J. Holden (New Plymouth), and D. L. Woon (Hamilton). R. H. Glading (Hamilton), now competing as an amateur, won the professional title in 1949 and the open title in 1946 and 1947 as an amateur.

Former professional champions who will compete are G. E. Hudson (the defending champion), R. A. Jackson. E. A. Southerden, A. Murray, A. J. Shaw, and N. H. Fuller. Shaw is considered by many to be New Zealand's* greatest golfer. He has won the professional title seven times since his first success in 1928, the last occasion being in 1946. He has won the open championship six times. With Peter Thomson he won the open foursomes in 1951 and the professional foursomes the same year. They are again paired this year. Added interest to the professional championship will be given by J. H. Rogers, the St. Clafr professional, and J. M. Davidson (Chisholm Park), two British players now attached to Dunedin clubs. Rogers had two fine rounds of 71 at the weekend in a pre-championship tournament on his home course. Favouaites for Titles Thomson, Rogers, and F. X- Buckler are among the favourites for the professional title, with Thomson widely consido-ed the most likely to win the open. • Among the amateurs. As Gibbs (Otago), competing on his home course, R. H. Glading, and B. M. Silk are favoured, with much local support being given to a 17-year-old player, J. Durry (Otago), who had two 74’s in the pre-championship

Although the Balmacewen course has not been listed as a championship one, Otago Golf Club officials are confident that it more than measures up to the best standards in the country. It has been considerably tightened up, and few competitors are expected to break the scratch score of 72.
