Mooney and Overton resumed in still, cool weather. Rain overnight softened the outfield, ‘but the pitch was covered. There was. a small crowd. . , Overton showed no inclination to end an innings which had already lasted almost as long as any he hat played, and he defended doggedly, while Mooney gathered in runs quietly and efficiently. Mooney drove the fastmedium bowler Impey for four and. pulled the slow left-hander McKinnon, also for four. A drive for one gave him 50 in 138 minutes. The New Zealanders appeared quite untroubled by the bowling, and they had taken the score to 275 when Rabone declared. Mooney had brought his tour average to 120. Overton had stayed in 71 minutes for eight, and in 42 minutes this moaning the pair added 25, to which Overton contributed only one run, but defended stoutly. Hicks and Dakin opened for Eastern Province. Hicks had a life when he hooked a short one from Blair, and Sutcliffe, at backward square leg, jumped high, but failed to catch the ball. It would, how€Ver, have been

a sensational catch. Soon after this, a similar shot from Hicks went between two leg-side fieldsmen, and thus encouraged, Blair bowled a succession pf short rising balls on the leg stump.
