ACCIDENTS
GIRL DROWNED IN RIVER (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 9. A 10-year-old girl was drowned in the Waikato river at Tuakau about 4.15 p.m. today, in spite of heroic efforts by a nine-year-old boy to save her. She was: Maria Jane Waikato, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jimmy Waikato, of Te Kohanga, about 14 miles from Tuakau. The girl, who could not swim, went with two companions, Sammy Ngataki, aged nine, and Bella Tumai, aged 13, to the river. According to her companions, Maria dived in and did not come up. Sammy Ngataki dived repeatedly for her, although the river there is dangerous and there are many deep holes. Bella ran for help. The body was recovered about half an hour later.
