WELCOME STAKES AT RICCARTON

PRIVY COUNCIL BEATS HUSH MONEY

Privy Council, a winner at Trentham at his previous start, finished too strongly for the favourite, Hush Money, to win the Welcome Stakes decisively at Riccarton on Saturday.

Privy Council, a brown colt by Sabaean from Waltzing Matilda, was in the third line racing out of the chute to the course proper. There Mijiji, Hush Money, and Net were abreast, just ahead of Merriment and Captain Hawk. Assembly was alongside Privy Council and Magic Carpet and Ma Reine were next.

Mijiji was beaten well outside the furlong, and Hush Money reached a clear lead, with Privy Council moving forward to challenge.

Privy Council responded generously, and won going away by a length and a half. Hush Money beat Assembly by three lengths for second, .and the weakening Net was a length and a. half back fourth. Then there was a length to Ma Reine, three lengths to Magic Carpet and Mijiji. and a gap to Merriment.

Fourth Successive Win Brown Baron improved a very useful record for Major N. A. Rattray by winning the Suburban High-weight after a hard tussle with Cristatus and Diplomatic i.rr a nose-and-neck finish. This was Brown Baron's fourth successive win, and his most important success. • A. Cowan had Brown Baron well placed from the start. He was equal third with Cristatus and Ambrose, but about five lengths from the pacemaking Diplomatic starting the last half-mile, but was making up ground on the home turn three lengths from the leader. Cristatus joined Brown Baton in a chase after Diplomatic, and they caught him just inside the furlong, Brown Baron gaining a slight advantage, which he held to the post. ' Ambrose, which was alongside the winner on the home turn, weakened to fourth five .lengths behind Diplomatic, and two lengths clear of the tiring Ash, which led early and then trailed. Then there was a gap to Trustworthy, which was followed home by King Simper, Royal Monarch, Miss Chase, Original, and Reproof.

Highwayman at Good Odds Highwayman finished boldly to beat Style and Sir Galahad narrowly in the Spring Plate. .A winner at Motukarara a week earlier, this Washdyke-trained Sabaean gelding was at good odds, and paid £22 15s 6d for a win.

Dahlia led early, anji then Master Penfold, Adaris, and Super Duper rushed through to dispute the lead to the halfmile. There Accountant, Dahlia, and Referee, which had been slow away, were handy, and Highwayman was close by, with Style two places further back. Sir Galahad was also handy. Adaris and Master Penfold weakened just after straightening up, and Super Duper was caught near the furlong, where positions were changing quickly, with Fulgent, Style, Sir Galahad, Highwayman, and Mighty Dollar coming into the picture.

Highwayman’s final challenge was a bold one, and he just beat Style by a head. Sir Galahad was a neck back third, a length and a half clear of the weakening Fulgent.

Mighty Dollar, the win favourite, was a good fifth after a slow beginning, and Super Duper was practically in line sixth, clear of Late Fee. "Highwayman is trained at Washdyke by F. Trilford, who won the Suburban High-weight with Brown Baron. Sawdust’s Easy Win Sawdust ran to the front near the five furlongs in the Hagley Handicap, slipped the field on the turn, and won by four lengths from Balveine, which finished brilliantly from the tail of the field and beat Locherbie by two lengths. Pharoah’s Castle led momentarily just after the start, and Cock Crow took charge after two furlongs from Tom Bowling. Canyon Maid. Pharoah’s Castle, King Charles, Maid of the Woods, Sawdust, and Chief Mate.

Sawdust displaced Cock Crow as leader near the five furlongs, and these two were followed past the half-mile by Canyon Maid, Tom Bowling, Fluent, All Atanut, Pharoah’s Castle, Solstice, Locherbie, and Maid of /the Woods.

Sawdust increased his lead to four lengths just after straightening up and increased it to five lengths going to the furlong. There Locherbie was moving past the weakening Cock Crow, and Ptarmigan, Ra, Balveine, and Star Sapphire were finishing strongly wider out. Balveine ran the race out strongly, but Sawdust already had the race won. Locherbie beat Star Sapphire by half a length for third. Ra was close up fifth, and next to finish were Surprise Ending, Ptarmigan. Fluent, Paulette, and Pharoah’s Castle.

Bosky Causes Surprise N. Eastwood, My Hero’s rider in a successful Australian campaign, was applauded for getting Bosky up for a good win in the Riccarton Handicap, although this Riccarton galloper was lightly supported and paid the biggest win dividend of the day, £56 12s 6d. Bosky was awkwardly placed well back in the field starting the last half-mile, but he became prominent in the middle of the track outside the furlong and finished strongly to beat Cash by half a length going away. Cash was well up all the way, aqd followed Te Kooti, Lochlisten, and Desperado intd the straight. He had Te Kooti’s measure at the furlong, but could not cope with the light-weight’s challenge. , Wally French, after losing a good position early in the race, was third, two lengths back, and was clear- of Roue, which had the run of the race behind the leaders.

Lochlisten. after sharing the lead to the straight, weakened to fifth a length back, just shading Commodore and Desperado, which was last away. Poetical was checked early in the race, losing a good position, which he never recovered.
