MOTORIST KILLED NEAR KAIKOURA

CAR RUNS INTO BRIDGE RAILING

A motorist was killed in an accident early on Saturday morning when his car ran into the railing on the righthand side of the southern end of the Hakupu bridge, on the State highway, about eight miles north of Kaikoura. He was

Bernard George Miles, aged 36, a farmer, of Puhi Puhi Valley, Kaikoura. He was married, with five children. _

The accident occurred about 3.45 a.m. Mr A. F. R. Hayward, who was driving a party from Blenheim to Christchurch, found the car on its Side across the bridge and blocking the road. The Kaikoura police were informed and medical assistance was obtained. Mr Miles was found to be dead. At an inquest yesterday afternoon Constable D. Salt, who represented the police, said in evidence that part of an upright had evidently passed through the windscreen on the driver’s side. It was on the back seat. The cap had been driven straight on ,to the railing and support, said Constable Salt.

Mr H. J. Hewson said that Mr Miles had left his home in Athelney road about 3.15 a.m. He vys in good spirits, and in answer to a question by the Coroner (Mr H. J. Hayward), Mr Hewson said Mr Miles had not complained of weariness.

Mr Miles was born and educated in Kaikoura, and at 15, when still at school, fie was playing senior Rugby for the Kaikoura club. He later represented the Hurunui sub-union and Country sub-unions, and in 1946 he played for- Canterbury as a frorrt-row forward. At the age of 18 he won the first Christchurch-Waimate Cycle road race. He served overseas from 1940 to 1943.

YOUTH SHOT IN ANKLE

A youth, lan McCallum, of 307 Tuam street, suffered injuries to the left ankle when a rifle was accidentally discharged at West Melton yesterday. He was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital about 9 p.m. His condition last evening was reported as satisfactory.*

JOCKEY SUFFERS SERIOUS HEAD INJURIES

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 8. A jockey, J. L. Jenkins, suffered serious head injuries whert his mount. Nominate, fell in the Tiri Hurdles at the Ellerslie races yesterday. He is in. the Auckland Hospital.
