Heroism Of Woman Radio Operator
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, November 7. A Finnish woman radio operator, Miss Mirjam Eskola, aged 27, was the heroine of rescue operations late last night when the 2258-ton Swedish ship Bjoerkoe sank three miles off Cuxhaven Light, after being in a collision with an American vessel.
The Bjoerkoe’s master, Captain Bostedt, said at Cuxhaven today that she sent the first S.O.S. within seconds of the collision, and waS still sending when the sea began to wash the decks. She had to be dragged on deck from the radio room, Captain Bostedt related. •
A German pilot ship picked up 18 survivors, but four crew members lost their lives.
Miss Eskola is In hospital in Cuxhaven suffering from shock and exposure.
