CHANGE OF NAME BY DEED POLL

:| LAW CLARIFIED IN AMENDMENT BILL i (New Zealand Press Association; 7 WELLINGTON, November 6. • The law relating to change of name by deed poll is clarified by a clause in the Births and Deaths Registration Amendment BiH, introduced in the House of Representatives today. Provision is made for the registration of Changes of name under the principal act Z The bill provides 'that any person who is 21 years of age or over, or Jias been married, may change his name by deed poll : Such change, in the case of a child under 21 (who has never married), may be effected by deed poll by the parent or other persons whose consent would be required to an adoption of tha child. istrate to consent, where one of those persons wishes to change the child’s name and the concurrence of the child cannot be obtained. However, there is a proviso that the name of a child aged 18 years, or over, is not to be changed without the child’s consent. The registration of any deed poll changing a name may be effected by depositing it in the office of the Regis-trar-General in Wellington, with a copy of the birth certificate or other evidence of the date and place of the birth, of the person concerned. In the case of a deed already deposited in the Supreme Court office, a certified copy of the deed may be registered with the Registrar-General All birth certificates issued after the registration are to show the changed name only. The bill also provides that certified copies of birth certificates are to show only such particulars as are prescribed by the regulations. This will allow for shortened forms of birth certificates.
