JUBILEE OF WOMEN’S UNION

A public meeting was held in the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church last evening as part of a programme to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the formation of the Baptist Women s Missionary Union. A pageant depicting the progress of the work of the Union was presented. Mrs B. N. Eade, who has been working in the Indian mission field, and Miss M. A. Bradfield, who has also been in India, were welcomed by the president (Mrs L A. North). Miss Hazel Drew, who is returning to India after a year’s furlough, and Misses Joan Burtenshaw and Olwyn Kemp, two missionary designates for India, were bidden farewell by members. Cups were presented to “Ropeholders,” an organisation for junior mission helpers.

EVENING CONCERT

Members of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing enjoyed a varied and entertaining programme provided for them last night by three groups from the Risingholme Community Centre at Opawa. The centre’s choir, conducted by Mr A. Wilson, sang several choruses, and three of its members sang solos.

The square dancing group gave a spirited demonstration of square dancing, which greatly interested the audience, and nine members of the drama group presented an amusing play, "Bally Hoo,” which was produced by Mrs R. E. Taylor. Mr R. McGregor, honorary secretary of the league’s entertainment committee, welcomed the performers, and Mr Cranleigh Barton (president of the committee) thanked them for the pleasure they had given members.
