PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Sir.—On examination, all “Enlightened’s” arguments prove fallacious. She claims that from the biological aspect, women are necessary. This is quite in accordance with Mr Hayward’s letter, which stresses the fact that modern woman should try to cultivate a balanced philosophy suitable to her functional purpose. As for her quotation from Otway (“Woman, lovely woman”), there are two alternative refutations. —1. It supports Mr Hayward’s theory that the character of woman has declined in modem times; or, 2, Otway was a dramatist; therefore his remarks were made to suit his characters. Incidentally, Jaffeir, the character making the comments she quotes, came to a bad end through submitting to a dominating woman. This illustrates the maxim that the devil himself can quote scripture for his purposes. And he who sups with the devil must use a long spoon.—Yours, etc.. NATURE BOY. November 6. 1953.
