GIRLS’ HOSTEL IN AUCKLAND

GIFT OF £17,000 FOR EQUIPMENT

WELLINGTON, November 6. A gift of nearly £17,000 towards the development of a hostel for girls in Auckland is being made* to the Methodist Central Mission Trustees.

The trustees recently bought an Auckland home for a hostel, and the gift will enable it to be finished, furnished, and opened free of debt. The gift is the balance of the money held by the Edith Winstone-Blackwell Foundation, set up three years ago by Mrs J. H. Blackwell, of Auckland. The hostel will be undenominational, and open to girls in employment or studying. It will house 31 girls. The hostel was formerly the residence of the late Mr and Mrs Percy Winstone, and is situated in Victoria avenue, Remuera. The Government has already approved of a grant of up to £12,977 as half the cost of the property, together with the estimated cost of alterations.

At various times, Mrs Blackwell has given substantial sums to the Methodist Church. In 1948 she made a gift, through the Edith Winstone-Blackwell Fund, for home mission and church extension work.

In 1942, with her brothers. Mr G. Winstone and the late Messrs P. and F. Winstone, Mrs Blackwell created the Winstone Memorial Trust Fund as a memorial to their father and mother, the late Mr and Mrs G. Winstone. The interest from this £25,000 fund is used to subsidise the stipends of ministers and home missionaries in the Methodist Church.
