BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS

An offer from the Banks Peninsula Power Board for the supply of 10 additional street lights at Diamond Harbour was received by the Lyttelton Borough Council at its meeting last evening. The board offered to supply and maintain 10 lights of 150 watts, at an annual charge ot £5 10s each. The letter was referred to the electricity committee for a report. The council’s intention to levy a rate on the Banks Peninsula Power Board on its reticulation system at Diamond Harbour was acknowledged in a letter received from the board. The letter said that although the authority to levy the rate was not questioned, the board was concerned that such a rate was to be collected in one part only of the five rating areas in the board’s district. The board had therefore decided to add to the charge as a condition of its electric supply for street lighting in Diamond Harbour, an amount equal to any rate levied by the council. In reply to a question, the Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson) said that a supply authority could i.ot vary its charges to different localities. The council decided to object to the increased charges which the board proposed to make. The success of the Trinity hockey team (Lyttelton) in winning the Canterbury Hockey Association’s senior competition and in beating the Wellington team was referred to by the Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs). His motion that a letter of conSratulation be sent to the Trinity Hockey lub was carried.
