HEALTH STAMPS

ARRANGEMENTS FOR CAMPAIGN

The annual health stamp campaign will open throughout the Dominion on Wednesday, October 7, and to make arrangements fdr the sale in Christchurch a meeting of the Health Stamps Selling Committee was held yesterday afternoon.

The chairman (Miss M. Enright) presided and welcomed about 60 representatives of women’s organisations. She thanked the delegates for their continued loyalty and for the energy and hard work they put into their task of selling the health stamps. She said that last year’s sales had been a record and the advisory board of the Federation of Health Camps and the publicity panel of the board had sent congratulations to the committee on the success it had attained.

Miss Enright reminded delegates that in this year’s campaign in Christchurch, the committee had to reckon with the strong attraction that the London to Christchurch air race would provide early in the campaign and throughout the Dominion. Stamps to celebrate the visit of Her Majesty the Queen would be on sale from December 9 and would, not unnaturally, become very popular with the public. Miss Enright appealed to women’s organisations to help as much as they could in the sale of the health stamps during October. Dr. D. P. Kennedy, district medical officer of health, expressed appreciation of the great work that women’s organisations had done in the past in selling the stamps, from the proceeds of which health camps were maintained. He outlined some of the heavy expenses that the Glenelg Health Camp authorities were called on to meet, and assured the delegates that health camps, which were doing a fine work in the community, were still necessary. Mr D. A. F. Smith, deputy chief postmaster, also thanked the women workers for their valuable help and promised to do all he could to further their efforts.

A roster was drawn up providing staff for the stamp selling booth in the vestibule of the Chief Post Office every week -day from October 7 until Christmas. Arrangements were also made for staffing suburban post offices on the opening day (October 7) and preliminary arrangements were made for the sale of stamps at Harewood on October 10, 12, 13, 14 and 15.

The delegates, all of whom undertook to redouble their_ efforts for the campaign, were entertained at tea by Miss Enright.
