PLANE CRASHES AT HAREWOOD

PILOT NOT INJURED A four-seater Chrislea Ace light aircraft was badly damaged when it crashed on one of the main runways at the Christchurch airport as it was taking off about 4 p.m. on Sunday. The pilot and owner of the plane, Mr A. M. Ferguson, a Christchurch used car dealer, was not injured. Mr Ferguson is a member of the Canterbury Aero Club.

The plane’s wheels were just clear of the runway when one wing touched the ground. The pilot seemed to make an effort to get the plane back oil an even keel, but the other wing touched the ground, sending the plane Over on to its nose. The pilot lost no time in climbing out of the cabin, escaping with a shaking. The plane’s engine was torn out of its mountings by the impact, and two wheels of its tricycle undercarriage ripped away from the fuselage. One wing had the tip broken. The damaged plane was loaded on to a trailer with some difficulty, and the runway was cleared.
