AUSTRALIAN GOLF TITLE

WOON FAVOURED TO WIN

(Rec. 10.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 20. Golf experts believe the New Zealand player, Tim Woon. may win the Australian amateur singles title, after considering Woon’s superb form in the last fortnight. The singles championship will begin at the New South Wales course at La Perouse on Tuesday. The foursomes championship will be played tomorrow. Woon’s form has greatly improved from the first match of the tour. He has been the only member of the New Zealand team to win his singles matches consistently. He has beaten the Australian singles champion, Bob Stevens, and has twice beaten the New Zealand and state champion, Harry Berwick.

The singles championships have been divided into four rounds of match play. On Friday, the quarter-finals ana semi-finals will be played, and the final will be played on Saturday, over 36 holes.

Woon should have an easy task in the first three rounds, as there are no really top class players in his part of the draw. He will meet an inter-State player, L. K. Baynton. in the first round on Tuesday, and the winner of the match between the team manager (Mr K. Glendinning) and the New South Wales player. R. Sanderson, on Wednesday.

Stuart Jones will play the South Australian inter-State player. R. McCarthy. in the first round. Jones also has a comparatively easy draw, and should reach the quarter-finals.

Tom Jeffery and Sid McDonald are in the same section of the draw, but if they win their matches they will not meet until the fourth round. Jeffery has a hard match on Tuesdav. when he will plav the former State champion. Tom Tanner. The New Zealanderc today had a practice round over 18 holes in preparation for the foursomes. Mr Glendinning said the players were fit and well, and were confident that thev would do well in both foursomes and singles. “Put whatever barmens the New Zeatenders vnll he teving.” he said. Asked i* he thought Woon would win the title. Mr Glendinning said he would havr* a °nod chance. “Tim is never beaten. He ha«= proved this in his matches in Australia 1 “In the test match he was 4 down

to Harry Berwick at one stage, but got up to win. He has been beaten only twice on the tour—by the former Australian champion, Doug Bachli, and by Jack Coogan, of Queensland.”
