Hunter Jet Flown On Closed Circuit

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 19. Squadron Leader Neville Duke set up nis second world air record in 12 days today when he reached 709.2 miles an hour in a Hawker Hunter jet over a 100 kilometres closed circuit at Dunsfold, Surrey. Aircraft officials who announced the hew record said the figure was subject to confirmation.

The Royal Aero Club announced that Squadron Leader Duke reached an average speed of 1141.4 kilometres an hour (709.2 miles an hour). An official said the present confirmed record was held by Miss Jacqueline Cochran, of the United States, who attained a speed of 1050.182 kilometres an hour (652.55 miles an hour) in a North American FB6 Sabre jet at Edzards air base, California, on April 18 this year. Squadron Leader Duke’s speed today was attained in the worst possible flying conditions—low cloud, high wind and driving rain.
