ATOM TEST AT WOOMERA

SIR WILLIAM PENNEY LEAVES BRITAIN (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 19. Sir William Penney, the British atom scientist, left by air today for Australia, to attend the British atom test at Woomera in October. Sir William Penney, who is the Director of the Atom Research Establishment at Harwell, was responsible for the design of the atomic weapon exploded at Montebello in October, 1952, and supervised the technical side of the test He was accompanied by a colleague, Captain F. B. Lloyd. It was reported in Washington today that Britain will present to the United States Atomic Energy Commission a 40-minute film of the Montebello atomic bomb test. The film shows the preparations at the Montebello explosion site, and the atomic cloud and some of the visible results. A spokesman for the British Information Service said the presentation was intended merely as a friendly gesture.
