COST OF LIVING

Sir, —I think the figures quoted by “Fiat Lux” are ridiculous. He pays £ll yearly extra for bacon. This buys* 621 b at today’s price. That would be enough for the average couple. We are two in the family, and our yearly bread account is £5 12s fid—two large loaves weekly—not £5 4s extra cost. We collect, so buy cheaper, 2s 2d weekly. Our extra cost for petrol yearly is nil. We walk to shop. “Fiat Lux” is fortunate to own a house and car, as a garden is a help, also. He forgot to mention extra income—£2o bonus, which is 7s 8d a week for two people, or £3 Is 4d each. His figures indicate the trouble to be the cost of high living. If he does not realise he lives in the best little country on earth he surely needs, as his pen name suggests.—Y.ours, etc., MORE LIGHT. September 19, 1953.
