MINOR EVENTS AT NEW BRIGHTON

SHIRLEY HANDICAP TO ROYAL MARINE Royal Marine gained his first win since being purchased by Mr W. L. Parkinson last February, when he outclassed the field in the Shirley Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday. He was never far away ftom the leadets, and although he was checked by breaking horses neat the six-furlong post, he was just behind Sure Phoebe at the half. These two drew well clear of the remainder, and at the straight entrance they were eight lengths in front of Lillian Dale, Alandale, Redale, and Crystal Light, Which broke early ni the run home. Royal Marine took Control outside the furlong, and he always had the measure of the opposition, winning well by half a length from Redale. Redale’s placing was full of merit, as he had conceded the wihher 48 yards. He finished very solidly, without looking likely to catch the winner. Sure Phoebe ran a solid race for third, eight lengths back, well clear of Alandale, with a length to Bishop’s Cleeve and a gap to Idealist. Bishop’s Cleeve, Sure Phoebe, Bedelia, Combateer, Fairy Dell, and Black Pegasus made mistakes in the running. Excelsa Wins Easily The only surprising feature of ExcClsa’s win In the Introductory Handicap was her win dividend of £5 2s. The Young Bob mare began slowly but safely, and soon worked into a handy position. However, she was forced to race wide out. With half a mile to run she was about fifth, and her driver sent her up to join Warren Grattan in the lead. They Were clear at the straight entrance, with Young Sam, Sure Charge, Kuhla, Waihi Princess and Young Salute handy. Excelsa went to a clear lead with a furlong and a half to run, and she ran on in great style to win with a lot in hand by four Kuhla, which had been one of the early leaders, ran on better than the others to take second place, two lengths in front of Young Sam, which ran a sound race. The last-named was lucky to escape trouble when Casacando dropped out with half a mile to run. Warren Grattan, which had lost a lot of ground early, ran his- best race .for some time to take fourth place, fivs lengths behind Young Sam. Young Salute also did well to finish fifth. jUst ahead of

Waihi Princess, Mighty Falla, Cintinhatus • and the surprise favourite, Sure Charge. , The last-named was the pacemaker ih the middle stages of the race, but he I , did not run on. . , Casacando, Lexeter,, Jeopardy, Mighty Falla, Special Globe and Mighty Maori : lost ground in the early running. Valbbr in Fdriri Valour, having his first start for some ( 1 time, made no race of the Seaview Han- ( . dicap. He began smartly and trailed Tre- ! viso for almost six furlongs. He then ’ Went to the front soon after, add Grattah 1 Bay moved round the field to join him. : -.They were two lengths clear of Flywheel ; at the straight entrance, With Distant Star, Lady Rolleston, Christmas Spirit and . Treviso handy. Valour was always under a good hold, and he won more easily [ than the official margin of a length would suggest. Grattan Bay, a winner at Ashburton the previous Saturday, did. Well to take second place. He was slow and was forced . to cover a lot of extra ground. F. G. Lyhch has him very Well, tihd he will have bright prospect? of winning again ’ in the next few weeks. Distant Star, the favourite, received a perfect tun and he just got up in time to nose Flywheel, which could not get clear, out of third place. Xing’s Order, which had been hemmed in on the rails a good way from the leaders, finished with a brilliant burst to be a short neck back in fifth place, clear of Christmas Spirit, Lady Rolleston, Lucky Scholar, u Tiny Scott, and Sally Walla. ™ Shillelah, Silver Wood, Ayrland’s Pride, Loyal Jane, and King’s Order were among those to lose ground in the early runhing. Lady Jane Wins '• Lady Jane, one of the pacemakers over the last seven furlongs, finished on solidly to win the Bowhill Handicap. There was no pace on until the last three furlongs, and at this stage the field was bunched. Lady Jafie ahd her bracketed mate. Royal Hall, were together over the last six futt. lonfis, and they turned for home closely

attended by Royal Present, with Robih Gay (Wide out), Pfenho’s Pride, First Class and Direct Link handy. Royal Hall and Lady Jafife were joined by Royal Present inside the furlong, and the last-named looked to havfe the race won, . but Lady Jane responded gamely over the last 30 yards and won going away. Royal Present was always handy to the leaders, and he ran on well. He should soon Win. The Josedale Grattan pacei- has developed into a good type of horse. Royal Hall held on under a hard drive to take third place, clear of Rocky Reef, which made up ground, Robin Gay, Sir John, Pehno’s Pride, First Class, and Direct Link, which had been checked early.
