TACTICS WINS AT NEW BRIGHTON

TROTTING

Imperial Trust Beaten In Mace Handicap BATTLE CRY OUTCLASSES TROTTERS The Wyndham-owned and Yaldhurst-trained Tactics graduated to New Zealand Cup company with a most impressive win from 48 yards in the Henry Mace Handicap, the main race and second leg of the double at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Other fine winning performances during the day went to Battle Cry, Valour, Excelsa, and Poranui, and place-getters in Brave Company, Schwanda, and Alkin were impressive. Tactics, which had marred several of her races by beginning badly, began brilliantly on Saturday and she wes restrained on the rails about six lengths from the pacemaker, Lahore, until under three furlongs to run. Although she was inclined to run about under pressure over the last furlong, she finished gamely under a hard drive to win well from Imperial Trust and Aladdin, with Realm Again finishing over a tired lot for fourth. The Light Brigade mare, Tactics, will be a welcome addition to New Zealand Cup class. Raced by her breeder, Mr A. A. Wilson, of Wyndham, she is trained by M. Holmes. She did her early racing from E. Todd’s stables at Wyndham and started racing as a four-year-old. In just over three seasons she has had 11 wins and 11 placings from 41 starts for £6177 10s in stakes. The brilliant four-year-old trotter, Battle Cry, gave further evidence of his class when he outclassed a field of older and more experienced horses in the Nicoll Handicap. He was slow to become balanced, but once under way he did not look like putting a foot Wrong. He took over the running with half a mile to run and won without being asked for an effort. His 4min 29 4-ssec for the two miles was a grand effort for such a young horse.

Battle Cry has quickly graduated through the classes and he requires only two or three wins over a distance before he will have to meet horses of the calibre of Gold Horizon and Dictation. Battle Cry has been unplaced only twice in 11 starts, which have resulted in seven wins and two placings for £2237 10s in stakes. Flammula. another four-year-old. trotted a solid race for second. She may not be as brilliant as Battle Cry, but, nevertheless, she has more than average ability. Two of the easiest wins seen for some time were recorded by Excelsa and Valour, winners of the Introductory and Seaview Handicaps respectively. Both horses appear to have plenty of ability and more should be heard of them in the next few weeks. In a pool of 91,802 5b tickets on the double, 15,165 were invested- on the winner of the first leg, Excelsa. Tactics, winner of the Henry Mace Handicap, had 3216 tickets redeemed on her prospects, the successful combination returning £23 Ils 6d for £l. The meeting was held in fine weather before a good attendance. « The track had dried out well and was in perfect order. I The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £89.667 l(fc, including £8415 on the double, compared with £99,413 on the corresponding day last year. Tactics won her third race for the season when she got up to beat Imperial Trust in the Henry Mace Handicap. The Light Brigade mare began brilliantly and she was on the rails about five lengths behind the pacemaker. Lahore, at the end of a furlong. There was not much pace on for the first mile and a half, and there was no change in the order. Racing to the straight Lanore was stopping and Aladdin went to the front, with Imperial Trust. First Mate. Duncraig. Forward and Tactics all handy. Aladdin Was under pressure at the furlong and Tactics challenged. Tactics ran about under pressure, but she finished strongly and won well. Imperial Trust went a sound race ’for second. The Quite Sure gelding was never far away, and he finished well over the last furlong. Aladdin was stopping in third place, lie was far from disgraced as he was a sulky width out all the way with nothing in front of him. Realm Again.- which had been a long way back early, finished boldly over the last furlong to take. fourth place, clear of Forward and First Mate, with a gap to Heather Dillon and Duncraig and another to Lahore. Aladdin. Countermark and Forward broke at the start, but they did not lose much ground.

much ground. Cry Makes Amends Battle Cry. which had broken on a bed track at. New Brighton three weeks previously. outclassed the opposition in the Nicoll Handicap. The Light Brigade four-year-old was slow, and When the field settled down he was last. He quickly made up ground to be fifth on the outside of Battle Royal at the end of one mile. C. R. Berkett sent him round the field to take the lead with four furlongs to run. He was trotting easily at the straight entrance, where Ecosse was handy, with two lengths to Flammula, Concord. Battle Royal and Excellenza. Battle Cry always had the measure of the opposition, and at no stage of the final furlong was he asked for a serious effort. , , Flammula. the early leader, appeared to be well beaten at the straight entrance, but she finished bn Strongly to take second place from Ecosse.’ The last-named broke 75 yards from the post, or he would have made Battle Cry’s task more difficult. Battle Royal, which appeared likely to take second place, broke about 30 yards from the post, and he was three lengths behind the third horse, with Madam Grattan next, just ahead of Excellence, with a gap to Concord; uccellenza and Deportment lost ground at the start and General Lee, Fingal’s Cave and Quite Soon broke in the running. Crystal Light broke with one mile to run when disputing the lead with Flammuia.

Kublai Khan Wins Narrowly Kublai Khan, having his first start for about five months, gained a narrow win in tne Pacific Handicap in one of the best finishes seen on the course for many years, four horses crossing the line with little between them. Diamed made the pace, and was closely attended by Brave Company over the last seven furlongs. These two were shading Gay Lyric at the straight entrance, with Relight, Schwanda, Paia Royal and Kublai Khan all handy. Brave Company had control at the furlong, but he was soon being strongly challenged by Kublai Khan, with Schwanda hopelessly hemmed in. In a grand finish Kublai Khan just got up in time to nose Brave Company out of first place. Brave Company ran a great race, and he will be fit for the Methven Cup next Saturday. Paia Royal, which had been a good way back roost of the .way, finished brilliantly over the last furleng to take third place only a nose behind Brave Company. Schwanda looked unlucky to finish no closer than fourth, a head behind Paia Royal. He began splendidly and was handy all the way. Once he got clear on the rails he finished brilliantly. , Gay Lyric, which had been two and three out aR the way. stopped slightly Over the last 50 yards, and he was fifth, ahead of Brucus. with Sydney Victor, Relight and Battleground next. Battleground. Fillmore, and Counter - mark lost ground at the start.

Poranui in Form Poranui. the win favourite, gave a grand display to win the Farewell Handicap from the fast-finishing Alkin. Clean Sweep made the pace, but Royal Brigade took over with seven furlongs to run. | He was under pressure at the straight entrance. where Defendant. Poranui, • Knightmare. Eureka Scott, Spring Edition, Alkin, Ohio ai:d Lindy Lou were handiest of the others. Poranui took the measure of the leader inside the furlong, and looked in for an easy win until Alkin finished brilliantly to run her to half a le ?dkin might have been a little unlucky. He received a good trail most of the way. but near the six-furlong post he lost his position and was well towards the rear at the half-mile. He finished brilliantly in the straight, and looks to be near winning form. . , . Spring Edition, which had never been far away, also finished on well, and she was a neck back in third place, clear of Ohio, which made up ground. Royal Brigade was a fair fifth, clear of Girl Black with a gap to Springston’s Pride, Tribal Song, and Lindy Lou. Eureka Scott. Retard, His Majesty, Recent Choice, Mayenga. Crafty Guy and High Class were among those to make mistake* in the early running. Results:— SHIRLEY HANDICAP, Of £375. Trotters. 3min 38sec class. One mile ajid a half. 2. 2—W. L.
