TELEVISION AND THE CINEMA

Effect Of 2,300,000 “Free Theatres” (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 17. Television was having a considerable impact on the cinema business, and the competition was increasing, Mr J. Arthur Rank said today. In a statement circulated to shareholders of the Rank group of cinema and film producing companies, Mr Rank said: *<t must be borne in mind that television shows are virtually free. “Today there are approximately 2-306,000 television receivers in this country, an increase of about 800,000 in the last year. “This means that about 2,300,000 free theatres have been created in the homes of the people. If the situation continues, we must close many of our theatres to protect the activities of our business as a whole.”
