FLOOD DANGER

Sir,—l support Mr H. Hunter and other writers to “The Press” about flood danger in the Waimakariri. The chairman of the North Canterbury Catchment Board states that we should examine the work that is being carried out in the Waimakariri. First, read the notices on the river bed, “Trespassers will be prosecuted.” I suggest to the chairman of the board that he arrange a conducted tour of the board’s works on the river and explain to all interested the amount of money spent on each job of work. I am willing to pay my share towards a tour to be arranged by the chairman. How about it now? Let us all see the river before it flows through the Square and into the estuary. Dredge the river, give the shingle away, remove the 2,000,000 yards from the riverbed, then everything will be O.K.—Yours, etc., VOX ET PRAETEREA NIHIL. September 15, 1953. [This letter was referred to the chairman of the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr H. B. Anderson),, who said: “An anonymous correspondent—no comment.”]
