HELP FOR AIR RACE PILOTS

AIRCRAFT CARRIER IN TASMAN MODERN NAVIGATIONAL EQUIPMENT Contact over the Tasman Sea with aircraft competing in the LondonChristchurch air race next month will be maintained with air-warning radar, high-frequency radio, and high-fre-quency direction-finding equipment on the Royal Australian Navy’s aircraftcarrier Vengeance. The equipment has a range of between 300 and 400 miles. The carrier will be stationed about half-way between the most northeasterly point of Tasmania and ths middle of the West Coast. She will give out her position almost continuously during the time aircraft are expected to be within her range, and pilots will be able to fix their positions for the final leg of the course ot the air race.

Air-sea rescue, if it is necessary, will also be carried out by the Vengeance. The race would be of great importance to aviation generally, and would arouse world-wide interest, said the Australian Minister for the Navy (Mr J. McMahon), making the announcement about the Vengeance’s navigational aid to race competitors. For that reason, he said, the Royal Australian Navy was pleased to be associated with it and to be able to give assistance.
