HUNT MEETING AT GORE

RACING

REFORMED RETURNS TO FORM

IRISH GLANCE WINS STEEPLES ‘'The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL, August 30. Reformed, a Melbourne Cup candidate, returned to winning form when he won the President’s Handicap, the main event and the first leg of tire double, at the Eastern Southland Hunt Club’s meeting at Gore yesterday. In a doubles pool of £11,617 10s (£9233 5s of it from off-course investors), Reformed carried 4349 tickets. Cerne, winner of the second leg, the Mandeville Hack Handicap, had 438 tickets reinvested on him. The combination paid £43 16s for £l. • Snuffbox, which had failed in his previous start at the Otago Hunt meeting, beat the sprinters in the Mokoreta Handicap. He was prominently placed all the way, and won with a lot in reserve. The weather was fine, and the track, although cutting up, provided good going. Dashing Display Irish Glance gave a dashing display of jumping to win the Eastern Southland Steeplechase from Pageant, which was the only other runner to make a race of it. Pageant was outjumped by Irish Glance over the last six furlongs. Reproof lost his rider at the first fence, and Gay Revel fell at the end of six furlongs. Beeline made the running over the first round, but with six furlongs to run Irish Glance and Pageant ran past him, with Vanity Royal and Man’s Song heading the others. Irish Glance outjumped Pageant* racing to the straight, where they were still on terms, with four lengths to Man’s Song and Vanity Royal together. Beeline fell at the send-to-last fence. Irish Glance was first over the last fence, and he was not troubled to beat Pageant by three lengths. Two lengths back, Man’s Song was third. Vanity Royal was a head behind, fourth.

Reformed returned to something like his best form when he outclassed a fivehorse field in the President’s Handicap. It was a slowly-run race. Cogitation had. charge with a mile to run, where Taj and Reformed (under a hard hold) were together, next, ahead of Formal and Maritea, together. Taj took over with sixfurlongs to run, and at the half, where the field was racing in close order, Taj was shading Cogitation and Reformed, with Maritea and Formal securing a close trail.

Reformed ranged up to Taj in the lead at the straight entrance, with Formal moving up ahead of Cogitation and Maritea. Reformed headed Taj at the furlong, and won by two lengths and a half from Formal, which had no chance against him. Taj was a length and a halt back, third, with two lengths to Maritea, fourth, and three lengths to Cogitation.

Snuffbox In Form Snuffbox was always one of the leaders in the Mokoreta Handicap, and after gaining a lead of three lengths at the home turn he never looked like being beaten.

Dusty Miller was chopped back and lost two to three lengths at the start. At the half-mile Snuffbox had taken over from Royal Brithday, with Dusty Miller moving up ahead of Social News, Ned Kelly, and King Gundi, followed by Gypsyway. Snuffbox was three lengths clear at the turn, and into the straight he held this margin from Dusty Miller, Social News, Ned Kelly, Royal Birthday, The Tongs, and Gypsy way. Snuffbox won by a length and a half from Ned Kelly, which beat Dusty Miller by a neck for second. The Tongs was four lengths back, fourth, with a neck to Gypsyway, three lengths clear of Social News. Formation and Royal Brithday were next, and The Hob was last.

Chief Light gave an excellent performance to win the Waikaka Handicap. He worked his way between the leaders, Penze and Soumai, short of the post and won going away. Red Hand led along the back, but at the half-mile the field was bunched up, with Penze, Low Tide, Chief Light, and Countenance closely following the leaders. Soumai moved up smartly at the home turn to challenge Red Hand, and at the straight entrance Soumai had taken over, with Penze and Chief Light challenging and Red Hand losing ground ahead of Countenance and Gold Mine. Just as Soumai was being challenged by Penze, Chief Light came through between the pair to take charge with 50 yards to run. He won by half a length. Penze beat Soumai bv a neck for second, with Gold Mine a length back fourth. The totalisator handled £22,683 10s, including £2384 on the doubles machine, compared with £23,125 last year—a decrease of £441 10s. Results: —
